Factors That Are Looked Into During Classroom Walkthroughs

By Janine Hughes

Different classroom setting has an indirect effect to the learning of the students. But identifying these factors can be tricky especially if the patterns show varied and changing results. To constantly have an idea of what mode of teaching produces good response from the students, head of departments sit down on classes from time to time.

During this visit, they are to observe certain factors in the delivery of the lesson. They may or may not take down important points to remember. Classroom walkthroughs are done from time to time but institutions are not required to do it. It is never considered as a concrete way of evaluating teacher and student performance. When this procedure is done, here are the common things that are taken into account.

Behavior of the class. The way on how the class behaves reflects how well the teacher is handling them. This also includes the level of their participation. The more pumped up they are to participate the better.

Contents of the lesson. Getting an idea on the things that a mentor teaches his students is also vital. This is not only limited to the things that everyone can read in the book. Practical application of the lessons and relating it to present issues in the society is a good thing. This is a good means to determine how well teachers equip their students with timely information as well.

Instructional practice. This refers to the way on how the teacher carries out his lessons. A boring class will only be boring if the teacher does not know how to build an environment where students can have fun while learning. The motivations that he use during the lessons will also fall in this category.

Level of comprehension. It is also a vital thing to see how well the students understand the lesson. No matter how an expert a mentor is, if he does not know how to convey them to the rest, it will still not work. Those who are doing the walkthroughs are careful in noting down how well the information is conveyed to the participants.

Feedback. Questions asked to the teachers are not bad things. In fact, it is a good sign that the student is listening and is willing to learn more about the topic. The way on how the teacher addresses the person and how he complements them is a good practice in interaction.

Professionalism. Being professional when handling the class is a must to all teachers. This is what the head of the school would like their faculty to remember. From time to time, they want to get an idea on how well this value is practiced inside the classroom. From the punctuality to the way a mentor deals with the student, his attitude will matter.

Private or not, more and more institutions are seeing the importance of this mechanism. While not mandated by law, this method has proven to be effective in fostering dialogue with the faculty and the administration. This is one method employed to make some changes as needed in the delivery of lessons to the whole gathering.
