The Purpose Of Hernia Repair Surgery

By Michelle Nelson

There is nothing worse than being in pain, and not really knowing its source. Discomfort coming from the abdomen or groin area along with swelling is an implication that something is wrong. If there is a lump or budge in the abdominal area, it can suggest that hernia repair surgery is needed.

One may ask how to identify hernias. It is simply a bulge of body tissue or even an organ through a structure that is responsible for containing it. There is an opening in the structure of the muscle wall in the stomach when there is an abdominal hernia. The lining of the abdominal cavity extends beyond the opening which results in bulging. Activities that increase the pressure of the abdominal may do more damage.

Doctors that perform the repair then take out sutures that absorb to sew up overlying tissues. Repairs that are less stressful are usually performed using the laparoscopic technique. It is done with relatively small incisions. The desired outcome is to be able to separate hole margins from normal tissue so that it can get closed up using a suture and plastic mesh. However one can only hope not to be a strain on adhering tissue.

The edges of the defected area are usually pulled together through the use of sutures. It is almost like sewing a tear in a piece of clothing. Sometimes there are complications when tissues that are nearby are strained. These tissues may become torn which can develop into another hernia. A new development later came on the scene that sutured the weakened areas together with mesh. This material acts like plastic and is permanent in nature. It sews the margins together, while also allowing the body to perform its function by naturally going through the healing process.

After performing the repair, the underlying tissues are then mended with sutures that are absorbable. Repairs that are secure in nature are usually performed using a laparoscopic technique. It aids in repairing because it is less stressful.

Hernias can be repaired anesthetically in many ways. Usually a patient is given anesthesia for pain relief and a sedative that aids in relaxation. There are types of anesthesia available, but it strongly depends on the persons health that will determine the type administered.

Hernias are beyond an individual's control. Some of the contributing factors can be passed down and grows along with the individual. Depending upon how the local tissues are arranged. Tissue thickness can affect risks of developing a hernia. The risk can be increased by not using proper mechanics when lifting items, not using proper abdominal support, weight problems as well as smoking.

Anytime a hernia causes pain or impairs activity it needs to be repaired. Those that go without any type of treatment may result in emergency surgery in the future. Individuals may temporarily control their pain may wear a contraption that pushes the tissues in by applying external compression. It is called a truss, and it must be applied daily. Again this is a temporary fix and does provide a permanent solution to the problem.
