Speed Reading Techniques To Get You Started

By Bert Carpio

There are plenty of good reasons why you can benefit from increasing your reading speed. The only reason you need is what matters to you because speed reading is ideal for all people regardless of what they do for a living. But if you're going to pursue it, then discover what it's all about first and then commit to it. The return on your efforts will be hard to calculate because you never know how it can change your life.

We all know what it's like to want to give something a shot before making a big investment. You can find about a dozen or so programs that you have to pay for, but why do that until you're ready and sure you want to do this. Learning how to read faster is fun because it's very much like a game. On the other hand, if you're new to this, then using free apps will give you an idea of how they work. And then you can always upgrade to a nice program that costs, but the benefits may be worth it.

Most people tend to read sub-vocally, whether they are aware of it or not. As you read, you probably tend to say the words in your mind while you move across the page. The reason this is so universal is that children are taught to do this and are never told to stop even when they become more skillful readers.

Don't be lazy to make your personal vocabulary better and better, and this is something that very few people choose to do. Understanding what words mean will make you a faster reader because you won't have to ignore words you don't know or stop and look them up. Be sure you are using one of the approved, academic types dictionaries as they give you more important information. Remember that this is about ROI, which is a return on investment, and it's impossible to say how much that will be.

In case you never paid much attention to it, you'll notice when you read that you hear your voice in your mind. These are an obstacle to speed when you are reading.. There does not seem to be any easy method for getting rid of this sub-vocalization, however. Since this is such a strong habit, a varied approach may be the order of the day. Don't give up once you decide to go for it because it just takes effort on your part. One of the things about speed reading is you'll feel like you're starting all over, but it's just that it is something very new. Don't worry or compare yourself to anyone else when you first get started. There's nothing better than knowing that you can read a lot faster than 99% of the population.
