An Aromatherapy Neck Wrap Pillow Encourages Relaxation And Better Health

By Stacey Burt

The current renaissance of aromatherapy began nearly three decades ago, but the use of fragrant essential oils to promote well-being is ancient. Herbal concentrates have played historic roles as medications, cosmetics, perfumes, and in personal hygiene. Today they are used primarily as mood elevators and to improve the quality of life. An aromatherapy neck wrap pillow is a comfortable way to begin enjoying those benefits.

The oils are contained in plants that are already well-known for their pleasing fragrances. They retain the original plant chemical characteristics after being distilled primarily from herbs and some varieties of fruit. Their original purpose was to create chemical barriers against attacking insects, to attract the right pollinators necessary for reproduction, and to repel microorganisms that cause plant diseases.

Herbs store them in internal or external structures. They are termed essential in deference to the ancient idea of the force that exists within every living thing. Extra water is removed using various wet or dry processes to achieve final distillation. The result is a highly concentrated product that can be enjoyed simply by inhaling the vapors, massaging the oils into the skin, or splashing in a fragrant bath.

When exposed to fragrances that were present during significant events of life, many people enjoy a flash of recollection, or a vivid memory long forgotten. That happens because those molecules are processed in a portion of the brain also used to express and control emotions. Not every user has an intense experience, but most report that they not only feel more relaxed afterward, but can cope better with stress.

Although not a medical treatment, or even a viable substitute for necessary medications, essential oil use is common in venues providing physical therapy of various kinds, including spas, and even in some hospitals. During childbirth it helps diminish the fear and anxiety that can accompany labor, primarily by encouraging relaxation. Some depressed people report temporary improvement when exposed to herbal essences.

People suffering from ailments requiring difficult treatment commonly fall into a negative emotional state. This understandable human response is more than an expression of feelings. It can have real-life effects on the immune system, which may weaken, allowing new disease or infection to develop. Use of aromatic herbs can help combat those feelings, and may bolster flagging resistance.

Neck wrap pillows contain dried herbs or their essential oils, and surrounded by soft, comfortable fabric. Most are U-shaped, and provide a pleasant way to take a catnap or simply relax while watching TV. They can be heated according to instructions in the microwave, and are ideal for both hot and cold forms of therapy. Most varieties are available in a wide spectrum of colors and styles.

Although unfamiliar essential oils should not be used when pregnant, and should rarely if ever be taken orally, many people find they can be a helpful addition to conventional forms of relaxation, such as exercise. While attributed medical claims are unproven, stress relief and a positive attitude are both known to strengthen immune responses, which in turn may make the development of certain illnesses less likely.
